AI and wealth
Stuart Russell, a leading AI expert, emphasized the transformative potential of AI to either improve humanity's quality of life or lead to its destruction. He urged companies and countries to pivot their AI development towards ensuring it serves human interests. Russell expressed concern that current AI systems, like ChatGPT, operate as black boxes with unclear goals and potential to act independently. He advocated for designing AI to understand and pursue human interests, requiring a rethinking of existing AI concepts. Developing AI with a rigorous understanding of its components would provide confidence in its behavior.
Gartner AI Hype Cycle
According to Gartner, we are at the peak of ‘inflated expectations’. There is a lot of research, development and companies founded for AI, so expect both a great improvement in AI technology, as well as a bust and consolidation in offerings (in other words, it is hard to see the winners right now).
LLAMA2 released by Meta and Microsoft
Meta and Microsoft have joined forces to release Llama 2, a commercially-oriented AI model for both commercial and research use. The open-source code places a strong focus on responsibility, including safety testing, transparency, and guidelines for responsible use. Meta offers pre-trained and conversation-oriented versions of Llama 2 for free, while Microsoft integrates it into their Azure AI catalog for use with cloud tools. The upgrade allows companies to customize the model for various applications, with the aim of benefiting from the technology while allowing external scrutiny to check for biases and flaws. Concerns about misuse and potential dangers are also raised.
